Late Race Incident Steals Top-10 Run from the
#00 Aaron's Dream Machine Team
Tim Bainey Jr. and his
Aaron’s Racing Team spent most of the night running inside the Top-10, half
of that inside the Top-5, only to be caught up in an accident with 25 laps
to go. They would end the “Sears 200” 19th at Madison
International Speedway Saturday Night.
“We had a really great run
tonight, it’s too bad that had to happen with 25 laps to go,” said Tim Jr.
“But that’s part of racing, you just have to keep your head up and can’t let
things like this get you down.”
Tim Jr. and his Aaron’s
Racing Team had the #00 “Dream Machine” tuned in for the Madison Event. The
team clocked in 10th on the final practice speed chart and were
looking for a shot at a Top-5 qualifying position.
The chances of that were
wiped out as the threat of rain moved into the area, and the USAR officials
decided to cancel the qualifying session.
“We really wanted to get
qualifying in tonight, we ran an 18.4 in practice and had a real shot at
being inside the top five – but there wasn’t anything we could do about
that,” said Tim Jr.
The #00 Aaron’s Dream
Machine proved to be that strong throughout the event. Tim Jr. would spend
about 50 of the first 110 laps inside the top-5, and take the Dream Machine
as high as 3rd before coming to pit road for tires just after
halfway.
“We thought the weather was
going to play a part tonight,” said Crew Chief Dan Bainey. “So we wanted to
get up front and hang out there until we saw what was going to happen. We
tracked the weather, and once we saw that it was going to miss us we brought
Timmy to pit road.”
With nearly everyone still
on the lead lap, Tim Jr. and the #00 Dream Machine would restart back in the
22nd position, but it wouldn’t take long before he was back up
battling inside the top-10.
After another round of pit
stops, Tim Jr. would work the Dream Machine all the way up to the 7th
position.
The action picked up from
there. Tim Jr. slipped back to 11th, then back into the top-10.
As he settled into position the 4th place car turned the 3rd
place car just in front of him. The spin caused everyone behind them to
scatter into what became the biggest wreck of the night, taking out 5 of the
thop-10 cars - Tim Jr. and the Dream Machine were caught up in the mess.
“It’s too bad,” said Tim
Jr. “But there wasn’t much we could do about that – guys just got a little
too pushy and then it broke loose. We had a really good car tonight. We’ve
been making a lot of changes on the cars this year to try and give ourselves
a something that would run in the top-5 – and tonight we had it. I’m really
proud of my Aaron’s Team.”
After several trips to pit
road under the caution, Tim Jr. and the Aaron’s Team managed to limp the
Dream Machine home with a 19th place finish.
